TASTING THE DELICIOUS OF BANJAR SOTO AT RIVERSIDE

A trip to Banjarmasin city, South Kalimantan wouldn’t be complete without tasting its signature dish, Soto Banjar. I originally wanted to go hunting for Soto Banjar on my own in the city. However, due to a tight work schedule, I ended up being taken to one of the most well-known Soto Banjar spots in Banjarmasin: Soto Banjar Bang Amat.
Bang Amat’s soto stall is located right on the banks of the Martapura River. While waiting for your order, you’ll be serenaded with traditional Panting music, unique to Banjarmasin, while enjoying the gentle breeze by the riverside.

Oh, and because it’s situated on the riverbank, this soto stall can be reached by both land and water. Many visitors returning from the Lok Baintan floating market usually make a point to stop by here.

Warung soto Banjar Bang Amat
I ordered a half-portion of Soto Banjar for IDR 17,000. Why only half? Because the Soto Banjar portions here are known to be quite large. Rather than waste any, especially since I’d just eaten two hours earlier, I opted for a smaller portion. I figured if I was still hungry, I could always order more. Hehe.

A short while later, a bowl of Soto Banjar with a boiled egg and a potato fritter, along with a glass of iced orange juice, was served in front of me.

With its blend of liquid milk and a signature chicken broth, Bang Amat’s Soto Banjar is truly savory and delightful on the palate. Aside from Soto Banjar, the stall also serves chicken satay. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to try it because I was in a rush. I heard Soto Banjar tastes even better when paired with chicken satay. Sigh. Now I keep thinking about it.
Enjoying Soto Banjar by the riverside while observing the daily life of locals along the Martapura River is truly an unforgettable experience. Next time I’m in Banjarmasin, I’d like to go on a quest to find more Soto Banjar spots—and perhaps other local delicacies as well.
What about you? Besides Soto Banjar, what other Banjarmasin dishes would you recommend trying? (EKW)
